12th Annual European Supply Chain and Logistics Summit

14th – 16th June 2010

Germany

"React with confidence to an uncertain economic climate"

2009 speakers included:

Mike Gray

Mike Gray

Supply Chain Director
DELL, Inc

Over the years, DELL, Inc has constantly been revered for its revolutionary Build-to-Order approach to supply chain management, which defined its supply chain pre-eminence. This year, however, DELL made the ground-breaking decision to retreat from its pioneering, lean Build-to-Order model, and move towards the traditional Build-to-Stock approach.
Mike Gray, Supply Chain Director at DELL, Inc will reveal the principles behind DELL’s decision, highlighting rising costs and complexities as the main drivers behind the change in strategy. Mike will disclose how DELL’s supply chain model is evolving into a series of multiple supply chains, in turn accepting the need to exchange supply and flexibility for demand precision.

James Booth

James Booth

European Kaizen Director
Esselte

With businesses under pressure to cut costs, exacerbated by the current economic downturn, James Booth, European Kaizen Director at Esselte, Germany, will highlight how tremendous cost savings have been achieved at Esselte through a long-term lean journey.
James will present how inventory costs have been reduced by US$100 million since implementing lean thinking in 2002, while he will also emphasise the link between lean with “green”, citing how he has saved US$50k in energy costs. James will further argue that the key factor in any lean implementation is that it is culturally accepted, from top to bottom, as a philosophy and long-term journey; not merely a quick fix.

Volker Schmitz

Volker Schmitz

Director, Supply Chain Development, IPG EMEA
Hewlett Packard

HP 's Imaging and Printing Group is currently focusing its supply chain strategy on the key areas of costs, inventory and emerging markets. Despite arguments in some quarters that the current economic climate will result in regional supply chains rather than global, Volker will reveal HP Imaging and Printing’s successful global structure; sourcing and manufacturing in China and Vietnam, then delivering to a global customer base. Volker will argue that today’s cost pressures in fact compel HP to pursue low cost sourcing and manufacturing in Asian markets, while also redesigning the outbound supply chain based on shifts in buying power to emerging markets.

Petri N. Jarvinen

Petri N. Jarvinen

Global Customer Service Logistics Director

Barry Ashby

Barry Ashby

Procurement Director
Brush Turbo Generators

Barry Ashby is Procurement Director for Brush Turbo Generators, based in the UK. The recent economic downturn in recent months has brought more focus and potentially a re-think in Low Cost Country Sourcing (LCCS) strategy, with arguments in some quarters going as far as to say that "low cost" as we know it no longer exists.
Therefore, Barry will ask if this really is the end of LCCS? If so, what next for manufacturers? In an era where credit is short, and businesses are under increasing pressure to cut costs, what can the enterprise do to source at a low cost? In turn, Barry will also consider the wider, far-reaching question of whether this means a global approach to sourcing is no longer appropriate.

Rehman Mohammed

Rehman Mohammed

Senior Director, Supply Chain Field Operations
Cisco Systems, Inc

Rehman Mohammed, Senior Director for Supply Chain Field Operations at Cisco Systems will highlight the importance of returns logistics as the hidden jewel in supply chain management today. In a world where finding new revenue streams is now more vital than ever before, Rehman will reveal how Cisco turned its reverse logistics function from a US$8 million cost sink to a net revenue contribution of US$ 100+ million by applying a sales-driven model, in turn changing the cultural mindset. He will share actionable lessons learned from Cisco's overhauling of its returns processes, identifying residual value in returned product, and generating demand for refurbished product among a wide range of customers. In addition, Rehman will argue that the after chain forms a key part of Cisco’s environmental agenda, with all products and components returned in 2008 having been recycled.

In an uncertain global paradigm, sourcing can well and truly be the answer to your fears.

He will discuss the changing landscape of the automotive market, analysing how enterprises can drive growth through greater collaborative efforts and increased standardisation. He will also put forward the need to skill your workforce, highlighting Continental’s regional training centre scheme as well as the benefits lean competencies can provide in the current climate.

Additionally, Peter will also detail how his new transport framework delivers on sustainability goals, saving 270,000 miles and 30,000 gallons of diesel per year. Finally, he will highlight how these reduced costs are not impacting upon customer service expectations, in turn consolidating Kimberley Clark's order and delivery schedule.

Rafaelle Muscetta

Rafaelle Muscetta

VP, Global Sourcing and Logistics
LM Glasfiber

Rafaelle Muscetta is VP of Global Sourcing and Logistics at LM Glasfiber, based in The Netherlands. Rafaelle will focus on the challenging global environment in which businesses now must operate. One of the key questions currently is whether retreat from globalisation, or if indeed any form of retreat is viable.
Rafaelle will contend that a move away from globalisation, towards a form of "glocalisation" is the way forward through the economic storm. Arguing that the time is right for a reality check, he will specify when it is right, if at all, to go global, and when it is right to go regional or local. Further more, Rafaelle will propose a pathway to move forward through the new economic climate, starting with protecting cashflow and culminating in a new avenue for long-term growth.
